The staff member will tell you what time to arrive at the hospital for your surgery. Stop taking NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen (Advil® and Motrin®) and naproxen (Aleve®), 2 days before your surgery. Stop taking vitamin E, multivitamins, herbal remedies, and other dietary supplements 7 days before your surgery. If you have not already filled out a Health Care Proxy form, we recommend you do now.

It’s important to talk with your healthcare providers about how much alcohol you drink. There are others, so be sure your healthcare provider knows all the medications you’re taking. It’s attached on one end to the short catheter so it can drain the fluid away from your brain.
Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing. You may cover the areas with a gauze bandage if they weep or rub against clothing. Problems with a VP shunt happen even with regular care and at unpredictable times. The shunt can get worn out or move as a child grows.

They will place the tip of the shunt into a ventricle, a fluid-filled space in your brain. Be given anesthesia, medicine to put you to sleep so you do not feel any pain. You have a fever with a stiff neck or a severe headache. The child can have another buildup of fluid in the brain. Wash your child's incision areas daily with warm, soapy water, and gently pat them dry.

Incision care
The doctor will also give you instructions about your child taking any new medicines. It is important to watch for signs of infection or signs that the shunt is not working right. If your child's shunt gets infected or stops working well, it may need to be removed or replaced.
Tell them the dose of any medications you took after midnight and the time you took them. Make sure to include prescription and over-the-counter medications, patches, and creams. When it’s time to change for surgery, you’ll get a hospital gown, robe, and nonskid socks to wear. Practice taking deep breaths and coughing before your surgery. Your healthcare provider will give you an incentive spirometer to help expand your lungs.

A shunt also can get infected, which can be very serious. It's important for families to follow the surgeon's instructions for when to call and when to go to the ER. This way, treatment for an infected or worn out shunt can start as soon as possible. We give food to people in need during their cancer treatment.
You will probably feel tired, but you should not have much pain. For a few weeks after surgery, you may have headaches. Most shunts have two catheters connected by a valve. One end of the upstream catheter is in a ventricle. The other end of the downstream catheter is in the peritoneal (pair-et-NEE-ul) cavity. This is the space inside the belly where the stomach and the bowels sit.
At first, you’ll get pain medication in your IV line. Once you’re able to eat normal food, you’ll get oral pain medication . When you’re taken to your hospital room, you’ll meet one of the nurses who will care for you while you’re in the hospital. While you’re in the hospital, your nurses will teach you how to care for yourself while you’re recovering from your surgery. Once you recover from the anesthesia, a staff member will take you to your hospital room. The length of time you’ll stay in the PACU may also depend on when your hospital bed is ready for you.
